ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
William Ronald "Bill" Reid (1920-1998) was a Canadian Haida artist, goldsmith, carver, sculptor, writer, and broadcaster. Born in Victoria, British Columbia, he was the son of Sophie Gladstone, a Haida woman of the Raven-Wolf Clan of T'anuu, and an American father of Scottish-German ancestry. His exploration of his Haida heritage became a lifelong artistic and personal journey. Reid began his professional life in radio and worked for the CBC while studying European jewelry techniques in Toronto. His maternal grandfather, Charles Gladstone, and the legacy of the celebrated Haida artist Charles Edenshaw helped guide his study of Northwest Coast design. Reid combined exacting goldsmithing methods with the formal language of Haida art, working across jewelry, argillite, cedar, bronze, drawing, and silkscreen printing. His career expanded from intimately scaled adornments to monumental public sculptures. Among his best-known works are The Raven and the First Men and the bronze canoe compositions known as The Spirit of Haida Gwaii. Through his art, writing, mentorship, and community involvement, Reid played an important role in the renewal and wider understanding of Haida visual traditions. His work retains a distinctive balance of technical precision, narrative vitality, and sculptural presence.
