ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Iljuwas Bill Reid (1920-1998) was a Canadian Haida artist whose work encompassed goldsmithing, carving, sculpture, printmaking, writing, and broadcasting. Born in Victoria, British Columbia, to a Haida mother and an American father of European ancestry, he began exploring his Haida heritage as a young adult. His maternal lineage connected him to the Raven clan of T'aanuu and to the artistic legacy of the celebrated Haida master Daxhiigang, or Charles Edenshaw. While working as a CBC broadcaster, Reid trained in European goldsmithing at the Ryerson Institute of Technology. He brought the precision of jewelry making to his study of historic Haida works, developing a finely controlled approach to ovoids, formlines, and the relationships between human, animal, and supernatural beings. His practice ranged from intimate jewelry and graphic works to monumental carvings and bronzes. Reid became an important force in the renewal of Northwest Coast artistic traditions during the second half of the twentieth century. Major works such as The Raven and the First Men and The Spirit of Haida Gwaii brought Haida narratives into prominent public settings while retaining their cultural depth and transformative character. He also served as a mentor, writer, and advocate, creating a legacy rooted in technical mastery, cultural reclamation, and a lifelong engagement with the living traditions of Haida art.
