George Gott Model G-30-U and Model GDP-50-P are rare, highly collectible mid-1950s vacuum tube audio components manufactured by Bigg of California. Designed by George Gott, these mono hi-fi units were praised for delivering high performance at an affordable, consumer-friendly price point.George Gott Model G-30-U Mono Power AmplifierThe G-30-U is a compact monoblock power amplifier rated at 30 watts. It relies on a classic, ultra-linear Williamson-type circuit design known for low distortion.Tube Complement: It typically utilizes a pair of 5881 (or 6L6) power output tubes, a pair of 6SN7 driver/input tubes, and a 5U4 (or 5AR4) rectifier tube. (Note: Later production runs occasionally substituted the 6SN7s for 12AX7/12AU7 miniature tubes).Physical Specs: Measures 12 by 8.5 inches with a 7-inch height.Key Features: Equipped with a manual hum-balancing potentiometer and two auxiliary AC outlets. It does not feature a dedicated power switch, as it was designed to plug into and be triggered by a master control preamplifier.Performance: Features an input sensitivity of 0.22 volts for a 1-watt output, with a hum level measured at an impressive 83 dB below 1 watt.George Gott Model GDP-50-P Mono PreamplifierThe GDP-50-P (frequently cross-referenced with its sister model, the GP-30-P) is a self-powered companion tube mono preamplifier designed to act as the control hub for the power amp.Equalization & Inputs: Features multiple audio inputs alongside five distinct phonograph equalization curves, which allowed 1950s audiophiles to precisely match different vinyl record cutting characteristics before the RIAA standard became fully universal.Controls: Outfitted with dedicated, step-adjustable rotary controls for bass and treble tone adjustments.Power Integration: Includes the master power switch required to turn on integrated power amplifiers like the G-30-U via shared AC lines.Modern Vintage Market ValueBecause Bigg of California gear was produced in limited quantities compared to giants like Dynaco or McIntosh, these units are quite scarce today. Single un-restored amplifiers surface on auction platforms like eBay for roughly $400 USD, whereas a fully operational, factory-matched pair of G-30-U monoblocks can fetch $1,400 USD or more depending on cosmetic and electronic condition. Original documentation is heavily sought after; physical Sams Photofact repair schematics specifically for the G-30-U are still traded among vintage audio restorers. Are you looking to restore an original set of these components, or are you trying to verify the schematic wiring for a repair project?
