ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Giosuè Carducci (1835-1907) was an Italian poet, literary critic, scholar, and teacher whose career bridged the ideals of the Risorgimento and the cultural life of unified Italy. Born at Valdicastello in Versilia, Tuscany, he spent formative childhood years in the Maremma. He later studied philosophy and philology at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, developing the classical learning that would remain central to his writing. In 1860 Carducci was appointed to the chair of Italian literature at the University of Bologna, where he taught for more than four decades. His poetry united classical discipline with civic feeling, historical reflection, personal memory, and the landscapes of Tuscany. Collections including Rime Nuove and Odi Barbare demonstrate both his command of Italian literary tradition and his experiments with forms inspired by ancient verse. Carducci also worked as a critic, editor, and historian of literature, while participating actively in the political and intellectual debates of his age. He became a senator of the Kingdom of Italy in 1890 and received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1906. He died in Bologna the following year. His final home, now Casa Carducci, preserves his library, papers, furnishings, and enduring association with the city.
