ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Tony Bennett (1926-2023), born Anthony Dominick Benedetto, was an American singer and visual artist from Astoria, Queens, New York. His enthusiasm for drawing began in childhood, when he made sidewalk pictures in chalk, and he later studied at Manhattan's School of Industrial Art. Although celebrated internationally as a vocalist, he maintained painting as a parallel lifelong practice.

Working principally under the name Anthony Benedetto, Bennett used watercolor, oils, charcoal and drawing media to portray landscapes, city views, gardens, architecture and fellow musicians. Travel associated with his performing career furnished subjects around the world, while New York-particularly Central Park-remained a recurring source of inspiration. He continued his artistic studies with private teachers and often worked while touring.

Bennett's visual art received commissions from the United Nations and the Kentucky Derby. Examples entered public collections including the Smithsonian American Art Museum and National Portrait Gallery, where his subjects range from a luminous Central Park landscape to a watercolor portrait of Duke Ellington. His paintings share the warmth, directness and close observation that characterized his musical interpretations, joining two sustained forms of creative expression across an extraordinary career.
