ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
John Harvey Kellogg (1852-1943) was an American physician, health reformer, editor, inventor, and author whose career became closely linked with Battle Creek, Michigan. Born in Tyrone, Michigan, he moved with his family to Battle Creek as a child and grew up amid the emerging Seventh-day Adventist health-reform movement. Kellogg studied medicine at the University of Michigan and received his M.D. from Bellevue Hospital Medical College in New York in 1875. The following year he became physician-in-chief of Battle Creek's Western Health Reform Institute, which he renamed the Battle Creek Sanitarium. There he promoted a broad regimen of vegetarian diet, exercise, fresh air, hydrotherapy, and preventive health practices. His food experiments contributed to the development of grain-based meat substitutes and flaked breakfast cereals. A prolific medical and health writer, Kellogg edited the periodical later known as Good Health and published approximately fifty books addressing physiology, hygiene, nutrition, and domestic medicine. His public-health advocacy included opposition to tobacco and an emphasis on healthy daily habits. His legacy is also complicated by his prominent support of eugenics, a now-discredited movement that sought to control human reproduction. Kellogg remained active in medicine and health education for much of his long life, leaving an enduring and controversial place in American medical and dietary history.
