ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Joseph Stalin (1878-1953) was a Georgian-born Soviet political leader and political writer. Born Ioseb Jughashvili in Gori, then part of the Russian Empire, he studied at the theological seminary in Tiflis before entering the Marxist revolutionary movement. He joined the Bolshevik faction and adopted the name Stalin during an underground political career marked by arrests and exile. Following the 1917 Russian Revolution, Stalin held senior party and government positions and became General Secretary of the Communist Party in 1922. By the late 1920s he had emerged as the Soviet Union's dominant ruler. Forced collectivization and rapid industrialization transformed the country, while famine, mass repression, political purges, imprisonment, and executions caused immense human suffering. During World War II, he led the Soviet Union in its war against Nazi Germany and helped shape its emergence as a postwar superpower. Stalin wrote and delivered texts concerning Marxism-Leninism, nationality policy, party organization, revolution, economics, and linguistics. His collected writings were prepared by Soviet institutions and translated for international circulation. They remain primary historical documents for the study of Soviet ideology and political culture, inseparable from the authoritarian system and violent policies of his rule.
