ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
John Haymson (1902-1980) was an Austrian-born American artist known for watercolors, lithographs, and lively architectural and travel scenes. Born in Vienna, he entered the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts at sixteen and later studied with master etcher Luigi Kasimir. His early career also included stage and costume design for theatrical producer Max Reinhardt in Salzburg, experiences that strengthened his gift for expressive line and carefully staged composition. Haymson and his wife fled mounting Nazi persecution in Europe in 1938, eventually reaching the United States in 1939. He worked on motion-picture synopses for Warner Brothers before teaching painting at Parsons School of Design in New York. From his Manhattan studio, he developed a broad body of work inspired by historic architecture, city streets, international travel, and the people and cultures he encountered across Europe, Mexico, Israel, Greece, and elsewhere. His fluid draftsmanship and restrained washes gave his architectural subjects an immediacy resembling pages from an artist's travel journal. During the 1960s and 1970s, his images were widely distributed through the New York Graphic Society and Aaron Ashley, Inc. In 1969 he worked with Atelier Mourlot and created anti-war lithographs associated with the National Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy. Examples of his graphic work entered the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Haymson died in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, in 1980.
