ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Jules Verne (1828-1905) was a French novelist and dramatist born in the port city of Nantes. Ships, harbors, distant destinations, and the activity of the Loire helped shape an imagination drawn to travel and discovery. Sent to Paris to study law, he instead pursued literature, writing plays, songs, stories, and essays while researching widely. His decisive partnership with publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel began in the early 1860s. Together they developed the Voyages extraordinaires, a sweeping series of geographical and scientific adventures that joined careful documentation with vivid invention. Five Weeks in a Balloon, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas, and Around the World in Eighty Days established his enduring literary world of explorers, engineers, scientists, and extraordinary machines. Verne moved to Amiens in 1871 and remained there for the rest of his life, balancing disciplined writing with civic service as a municipal councillor. His own European sea voyages supplied further inspiration. By transforming nineteenth-century developments in science, transportation, and geography into compelling adventure narratives, Verne became a foundational figure in speculative and science fiction. His stories continue to invite readers into a universe where technical curiosity and poetic imagination travel together.
