Designed in 1956, the Como tea and coffee service is composed of polished silver-plated metal with sculptural asymmetrical profiles, elongated spouts, fitted covers, and tan-wrapped handles. The rectangular serving tray has raised angular sides and coordinating wrapped handles. The five-piece service comprises a tall coffee pot, low teapot, creamer, open sugar bowl, and tray. The underside bears the Gallia rooster emblem and is stamped GALLIA, PROD. CHRISTOFLE, and ITALY.

ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Lino Sabattini (1925-2016) was an Italian silversmith and designer born in Correggio, Emilia-Romagna. Largely self-taught, he learned metalworking through practical workshop experience near Lake Como before establishing a studio in Milan. His command of sheet metal allowed him to transform functional vessels into fluid, architectural forms distinguished by sweeping curves and precisely balanced silhouettes.

During the 1950s, Sabattini formed an important professional friendship with architect and designer Gio Ponti. Ponti encouraged his experiments and helped introduce his work to a broader international audience. Sabattini's personal breakthrough came with the Como service, presented at an exhibition of contemporary Italian design in Paris in 1956. His designs attracted Christofle, and he subsequently directed the company's Milan creative workshop through 1963.

In 1964, Sabattini founded his own workshop in Bregnano, where he continued exploring the expressive possibilities of silver and other metals. He also collaborated with manufacturers including Cassina, Rosenthal, Moser, and Zani. Across more than five decades, his work united the knowledge of a traditional craftsman with the experimental spirit of postwar Italian design. Examples of his designs entered international museum collections, including that of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
