Peter Kommer Parnall (1936-2017) was an American illustrator and writer celebrated for his penâ€'andâ€'ink drawings, especially of animals, birds, and natural environments. His precise line work, minimal compositions, and strong silhouettes made his style instantly recognizable.

He illustrated over 80 books, collaborating with wellâ€'known children's authors such as Jean Craighead George, Byrd Baylor, Mary Ann Hoberman, and Jane Yolen. He also wrote and illustrated several of his own books, including The Great Fish (1973), Alfalfa Hill (1975), and A Dog's Book of Birds (1977).

Parnall received a Caldecott Honor in 1977 for his illustrations in Hawk, I'm Your Brother by Byrd Baylor.

Born in Syracuse, New York, and raised in the Mojave Desert, he studied at Cornell University and Pratt Institute. Before becoming a fullâ€'time illustrator, he worked in advertising. He later lived and worked in Maine, where he continued producing art until his death in 2017.
