Artist Description - Ryohei Tanaka (Japanese, 1933-2019)
Ryohei Tanaka was a highly regarded Japanese printmaker known for his exceptionally detailed etchings and drypoints depicting rural architecture, farmhouses, temples, and traditional landscapes. Born in Hyogo, Japan, Tanaka began producing prints in the early 1960s and quickly gained international recognition for his meticulous linework and quiet, contemplative compositions.

Working almost exclusively in black‑and‑white intaglio, Tanaka captured the textures of weathered wood, thatched roofs, and aged structures with remarkable precision. His prints were widely exhibited in Japan, Europe, and North America, and he became one of the most collected Japanese print artists of his era.

Tanaka was a member of the Japan Print Association and received numerous awards throughout his career. His works appear in major museum collections worldwide, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Cleveland Museum of Art; and the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo.
